I have been holding on to so many papers for so long, & I know I don't need them, since I have not had to refer to them at all, except one time in the last 12 years. Now I am in the mode to just lighted my load, now that I am single & ready to move on. But I don't know how long to keep Bank Statements, monthly bill statements, credit card receipts, DMV & car info, etc. I do know you keep tax files for 10 years, & vital reccords forever, but other than that, NOTHING is set in stone; you know, so you know!

financial documents are good to keep 7-10 yrs.
if you're unsure that something will come back for review, get a scanner and make a virtual library of your files. load files onto external hard drive and its yours for good..
keep your filing system a-z with the most recent dates in the front. after a year you can scan and make room for incoming paperwork.
