I'm a big fan of checklists.  I love the feeling of being able to cross something off my list...done!  What about you - do checklists work for you?  Comment below and we'll enter you in a drawing to win a Smead Tag Along™ Organizer: http://www.smead.com/Director.asp?NodeId=1693.

BTW - if you're interested in checklists, we have a page devoted entirely to them: http://www.smead.com/Director.asp?NodeID=1738 .  Check it out!

I love checklists!  I have way too much going on to be able to keep up with everything without a list. I'm a self-employed homeschooling mother of 3 (2 of whom have heart defects).  When I drive into town, I must have list for all the errands I need to do, and usually, a shopping list or accomplishments list for each of those errand's locations.  I have checklists by my desk to manage my morning tasks - verifying that I don't miss an action or forget a call-back.  I have weekly checklists to make sure I remember to do certain actions weekly, and monthly checklists for monthly to-dos, and also a monthly bills checklist in hopes that I don't forget to pay anything important!  I have checklists on my door reminding me to get my checklists!

How do I remember where I put my checklists?

Hi Marilyn,
Isn't that the worst!  I've definitely misplaced a checklist before and it's certainly frustrating.  If it's an on-the-go-checklist like a grocery list I keep it in my planner.  I normally take my planner everywhere I go, so that works for me.

As Dana said above, if it's a specific checklist I would keep it close to the area I perform the task.  So if I had a cleaning checklist, I would put that next to my cleaning supplies rack.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

I love using checklists since I get a feeling of accomplishment when I can check it off.

My wife "The Lawyer" is a checklist fanatic.  After 27 years, I now swear by them.
I type it up each morning and email /text copies to our cell phones and email accounts so we have all bases covered.  As things are done I text the update to all cells and email accounts.

As the "Honey Do List" is always in flux, we are able to adjust without speaking.

For Christmas, we have a Master List of all Recipiants with their own section.  The sizes, age and preferences are listed at the top and a numbered list follows based on what we see throughout the year as items of interest or items selected by the recipiant as a "Want".

We ask our family members to cut out adds or take a picture with their cell phones of items they want.
In 2010, we had 34 people on our shopping list including two Grand Children.
By listing each item , the source locations to purchase with pricing, we need only to place a check mark in the columns for ordered, received, wrapped gifts to know our status at any time.

From the master list we can select items to share with others so they may have a chance to purchase gifts that will be meaningful to the recipiant.  No ugly ties here.

Wow - that's GREAT Ron!  Thanks for sharing.  Great to hear you've found such success with checklists.  Sounds like you've developed a really streamlined process!

I am a Professional Organizer and I find the checklists very helpful for some of my clients. They are not for everyone, but I certainly pass them along with the Smead website for those who are interested.
Thanks, Smead!
