Is there an organizing problem that stumps you every time?   Maybe you simply need to look at things from a different perspective.  That is why we created the Smead Organomics Forum.  We want to help you get organized and believe that sharing ideas is a great way to problem solve.  To encourage discussion, we've decided to have a little contest and give away some of our very popular Project Organizers.

How to Enter:  Any post to the Smead Organomics Forums counts as an official entry.  The first five people to post in the Smead Organomics Forums will be instant winners.  Anyone who posts after the first five will be entered in a random drawing to win one the remaining 10 Project Organizers.   The contest starts at 12:01am ET on Thursday, January 21, 2010 and ends at 11:59 ET on Thursday, February 11, 2010.

How to Post: Go to: http://smead.com/forums/ and select a topic (you will need to login in to Club Organomics if you have not already done so).  Click "New Topic" and type your question.  Then select "preview" or "post".  Responding to another post also counts as an entry in the contest.

Prize: Each entrant is eligible to win 1 of 15 Project Organizers: http://smead.com/Director.asp?NodeId=1085
The first 5 people to post to the forums will be instant winners.
Any one after that will be entered in a random drawing for the remaining 10 Project Organizers.  The winners will be announced on February 16th in our newsletter and in the forums.

Rules: In order to be eligible you must agree to the Smead Official Contest Rules: http://files.smead.com/pdf/Project_Folder_Contest_Terms.pdf

As my boss and I prepare for the new calendar years, we came up with using a different colored folder for standing items in her filing - e.g. for sales team members, or by divisions, for 2010 we decided to use green hanging folders with matching file folder and she knows if she needs something for 2009 info on a person she can grab their blue folder, 2008 a yellow folder, etc. It helps know she's grabbing current information on an individual or group by what color she is selecting (green = 2010). It has really helped her when in a rush and helps me when filing monthly reports and financials for them.

I like the idea of color-coding, it really works well if that's how a person thinks (visually/color). The only potential downfall is that the system can become difficult to maintain if you aren't organized enough to keep all the colored folders readily available and continue to follow the system.

I need to know when to throw out old bills and receipts and Tax stuff. Then to follow through.

Clearly, I need all the help I can get (see other post "Help") so I can get my office -- and myself -- organized and in better control.  I am open to your suggestions!

Claudia, maybe this article would help you get started? http://www.smead.com/hot-topics/records-retention-guidelines-1394.asp

Follow through is a big issue.  Our February issue of Short Cuts will actually feature an article about how to keep up the organization once you figure out a system that works for you.

Hi Marjorie,

We have an article that discusses using color to organize in case you are interested: http://www.smead.com/Director.asp?NodeID=1317.

It has been shown that color is an incredibly efficient way to organize (we've done a little research on the topic )

Anyone who doesn't know where to start should go to MyOrganomics and answer the questions.  You will get organizing ideas based on how you work and the type of work you do: http://www.smead.com/Director.asp?NodeID=1108

Let me know if you have questions!

Gee, where do I start?  I definitely need help organizing.  I once was one of the most organized people you would find.  But, after going through all of the legal hogwash of going through a divorce, and constantly receiving papers asking for more when you think you're already ready.....  Everything winds up a mess.  Please help!

I want to be organized and I always get everything together when compiling the information for taxes but I find myself throwing paid receipts into a box instead of filing them away.  How can I learn to follow through and file away each month instead of tossing into the box for later.  And do you store receipts for major purchases with on-going maintenance contracts separate?  I need help!  Can you please send Mission Organization to my home?
