What is a drop-in test?

A drop-in test is designed to simulate what happens when a user repeatedly places large amounts of paper into a file. This helps demonstrate what would happen with use of a product over an extended period of time. For this drop-in test, a weight was dropped into a hanging folder. This was repeated until the product failed.

What were the results?

The test was performed by an independent testing facility with 10 samples of the Smead TUFF® Hanging Folder and a leading competitive product. The weight was dropped until the product failed and the number of drops that caused failure were recorded. At the end, the failures were added up and averaged. The Smead TUFF® Hanging Folder took an average of 14 drops to fail, while the leading hanging folder brand took an average of only 2 drops to fail.

How was the test performed?

Testing was conducted using a file stand and rectangular catalog that weighed 2.09 lbs. The 2.09 lb weight was used because it represents the average weight of materials commonly placed in a hanging folder. The hanging file was supported on the File Stand and the weight was dropped into the folder from a height of 8 inches above the top edge of the folder. This was repeated until the product failed. The number of drops until failure and the type of failure were recorded.

How does a product "fail"?

There were 4 different types of failure that were observed for in each product: corners tearing at the top, tears at the side under seam, seams opening up, and deforming of the rail. Failure in any of these categories, at the first point of observation, was defined as a failure.
