Sustainable Forestry Initiative or “SFI”

What is SFI?

The letters SFI stand for “Sustainable Forestry Initiative”, and refer to an environmental organization that provides certification to companies like Smead to use in the marketing of qualifying products.

  • The SFI Program provides rigorous environmental standards and performance measures that integrate the protection of our environment with the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees, and the protection of wildlife, plants, air and water quality.
  • The SFI program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist.

Organizations that meet the rigorous standards for SFI certification have demonstrated a commitment to the principles of sustainability on the lands they manage and in the products they produce.

What does SFI mean for Smead?

Upon successful completion of an independent, third-party audit, Smead qualifies to use the SFI “Certified Sourcing” logo on all paper products produced with paper from SFI Certified Participants (SFI certified participating paper suppliers).

  • Smead’s use of the SFI logo communicates that the paper used to make Smead products comes from forests that are grown and harvested in an environmentally sustainable manner.
  • Smead’s sourcing practices are certified by an independent third-party organization to be in compliance with the SFI environmental program.
  • More than 135 million acres in North America are certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative®. And with SFI’s rigorous environmental standards, choosing SFI helps these forests stay healthy and thriving.
